This holiday of maternal appreciation is one of Canada's peak days for long distance telephone calls, as well as a busy night for restaurants. It's also a top gift-giving holiday for Canadians. Clearly, children go all out for gifts and flowers for Mothers Day! It's a storied tradition for America, too. The original holiday to our modern tradition was "Mothers' Work Days," which began in West Virginia in 1858 by Anna Jarvis. By the end of her life, Ms. Jarvis saw her holiday celebrated in over 40 countries. That's right--the tradition goes fary beyond Vancouver. Mothers Day flowers are presented to moms all around the world! The holiday falls on the second Sunday in May in not only Canada and the United States, but also many western European, Mediterranean and south Pacific countries. Mother's Day is popular in modern times, but this holiday has its fair share of deep-rooted history. Leaping forward in time, 17th century Britain saw the beginning of Mothering Sunday, when apprentices and servants could return home to visit their mothers during the fourth Sunday in Lent.
